ca1930s BRITISH MAJOLICA FIGURAL TOBACCO JAR - BOY SEATED ATOP A MELON #1

Description

Rare and original, ca1930’s British Majolica, Figural Tobacco Jar in the form of a boy with a pipe seated atop a large melon. This outstanding Tobacco Jar / Humidor measures approx. 11” tall and 4 1/4” in diameter at the base. It is molded in the form of a very large melon and features the figure of what appears to be a Dutch Boy seated atop the lid and holding a smoking pipe in his right hand.
This beautiful, Figural Tobacco Jar is made of a somewhat porous, stoneware ground with a brilliant Majolica surface. The Tobacco Jar has a blank English Registry mark on the bottom. We believe that this Tobacco Jar was manufactured in the first half of the 20th century and the design was based on that of a 19th century Tobacco Jay which has an African American figure seated atop the melon.
This wonderful, Tin Glazed Tobacco Jar is in excellent to near mint condition. There is no damage or repairs of any kind to the base or the lid and the glaze is exceptionally well preserved. The porous ground stoneware is clean and crisp and the Tobacco Jar displays beautifully.
